A new year bring new laws or changes to existing laws in Illinois. Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards states changes have been made to laws regarding firearms:
“One is the Safe Gun Storage Act, where is specifies that you must store your firearm safely if you know or should know that a minor, at-risk person, or someone who is not allowed to have a gun can access it. They are tightening up on that a little bit. If you have youngsters in the house or somebody that shouldn’t have access to a firearm, go ahead and lock them up and just avoid that problem,” reports Sheriff Edwards.
“Also, firearms, if they are stolen, they changed it from 72 to 48 hours. So, if you have a firearm and once you discover that it is gone, you must report that. It is always a good idea to have your serial numbers written down, the make, the model so we can enter that into the system. Lock them up, secure them, and if somebody takes them, report it to us immediately and have that information for us,” Sheriff Edwards adds.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Edwards says work on the new Warren County Law Enforcement Center continues to move forward as the floor plans are configured, a new escape route was designed, and placement of cameras is being conducted. As of now, the intention is to break ground on the design this spring.
