At the latest Monmouth City Council meeting, Police Chief Joe Switzer informed the Council that he would not be renewing the contract for the Flock cameras following an evaluation of their cost and usage, explains Operations Director Ken Helms:
“The Flock Safety cameras are automatic license plate readers. Basically, anytime somebody goes by them, it takes a snapshot of their license plate and then either notifies if there has been a violation of registration or we would use it for Amber Alerts. Chief Switzer did look at it to see exactly how many times we have used it, what we have been using it for, and evaluated that against the cost. The cost for our four cameras was about $12,000 a year,” says Helms.
“After he did the review on everything, it was decided that for the money that we are paying and the additional stuff that we also have going on it was not worth the investment in it per year. Chief Switzer has decided to cancel the contract and those will be getting pulled here very shortly,” Helms adds.
December 4, 2026, marks the end of Monmouth’s current contract for the Flock cameras.
